SpellingWord Study

Mrs. Hogate's homeroom will have Word Study on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.
Mr. Wiscount's homeroom will have Word Study on Wednesday and Friday mornings.
We will operate on a three day rotation as follows:

Day 1
  • Open sort (students explore spelling patterns and sort the words into categories based on similarities within the words)
  • Closed sort (students will sort the words based upon the spelling patterns revealed by the teacher)
  • Students will write their sorted lists in their spelling notebooks.  These notebooks will stay in school.  They will take their word cards home to study.
Day 2

The students will review their spelling words either as a whole class, or with a partner.

Day 3

The students will be assessed on selected words from their lists.  Not all words will be assessed each week.  There will also be a sentence dictation portion of the assessment.  For this part, the students will be expected to correctly spell words with the current and previous spelling patterns, and will be held accountable for correct capitalization and punctuation.

HOMEWORK
The students are expected to study their words each evening.  Some students prefer to study alone.  Others study best with a family member or a friend.  How your child studies his or her spelling words is up to you and him/her.  Please refer to the Word Work Activities hand out that came home for study ideas.
After Day 1, the students are assigned a "Word Find" that is due on Day 2.  This just means that they must FIND WORDS within text that fit the spelling patterns.  One word is required per pattern.  Please have your child write the "Word Find" words on the blank cards in the spelling word bag.  The words will be added to their spelling notebooks in class.
